Nansemond-Suffolk Academy girls advance in the state basketball tournament

From the second the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy senior drained a net-ripping 3-pointer to the time she followed suit two minutes into the third quarter to score her 2,000th career point, it was obvious that it was all about her.
To everyone, maybe, but her. More important than any scoring achievement was the fact that her team easily defeated St. Margaret’s 59-29 in the quarterfinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II tournament to get closer to the program’s first state title.
Nansemond-Suffolk will face Norfolk Christian for the fourth time this year in Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinal at Richard Bland. The Saints won all three previous meetings in lopsided fashion. Birdsong wasn’t thinking about her team’s next opponent.
