In the girls final, TCIS most outstanding player Harper Birdsong scored 16 of her game-high 28 points over the final 10:57 in leading the Saints to a 53-47 win over Cape Henry. Birdsong provided a steadying influence against a Cape Henry pressure defense that double- and triple-teamed her all afternoon.
“She’s a good player,” said Dolphins coach Nichole Jackson. “She’s a Division I player (Birdsong will attend George Washington), and I knew she could take over the game at any time. The game plan was to have anybody beat us but her.”
In the end, Birdsong did just that, scoring four points in an 8-0 Saints run to finish the third quarter with a 37-34 lead. During that spurt, Cape Henry’s Kennedy Beale picked up her third and fourth fouls. To read the full article in The Virginian-Pilot, please click here.
