Theatre

Guys and Dolls Performance

Theatre is a Part of Everyone’s Experience

In pre-kindergarten, students participate in dramatic play and accompanying activities. Beginning in kindergarten, they are introduced to collaborative experiences through grade-level performances that are designed to support the curriculum and to build confidence, which transfers to academic presentations in the classroom.

In middle school, acting fundamentals are integrated in sixth grade exploratory chorus, and musical theatre is introduced through the staging of a Broadway scene. As passions and talents are revealed, seventh and eighth grade students are encouraged to audition for the Winter Musical, which takes place in February each year. Past performances have included Les Misérables, Little Women, The Pajama Game and The Wizard of Oz.

Upper School Students who elect to participate in our stage crafts and theatre arts program are offered a comprehensive study of the theatre, including theatre history, production, design, improvisation, writing, directing and yes, acting! Students attend festivals, write and perform for performances on campus and participate in larger productions of plays and musicals. They are well-prepared for collegiate auditions through the preparation and performance of monologues and by attending workshops that are offered in Virginia and beyond. Music and theatre students also take an annual trip to showcase their talents and grow as artists by learning from professional theatrical performances.

Alumna Ryan Horton

Participating in the Winter Musical was absolutely the highlight of not only my senior year but also my high school experience. I was able to make friends with people that I would have never gotten to know otherwise.  We became like a family."
