- Strength and Conditioning Coach
Wellness, Fitness and Sports Medicine
Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is committed to the physical well-being of all students and athletes. Through research-based principles, the strength and conditioning program is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle, to enhance team and individual athletic performance and to reduce the injury risk of our student-athletes.
NSA partners with a specialist from Pivot Physical Therapy, who serves as our strength and conditioning coach. The specialist provides clinics, training and advice to coaches and athletes regarding conditioning, strength training and injury prevention. In partnership with our certified athletic trainer, the specialist also develops and implements comprehensive plans for injury prevention and recovery, including concussion management.
Sports Medicine
A certified athletic trainer is on campus for practices and home games to provide injury evaluation, management and rehabilitation. Emergency management care and concussion management are also provided.
Concussion Management
To ensure that student athletes who sustain concussions are properly diagnosed, given adequate time to heal and are comprehensively supported until they are symptom-free, NSA’s concussion policy includes return-to-learn and return-to-play protocols in compliance with the Virginia Board of Education. As an additional safety measure, our athletic trainers also perform neurocognitive baseline testing during the pre-season on all student-athletes to measure reaction times, memory and other neurocognitive functions. A Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) is also completed as a secondary reference.
