Upper School

Advisory Program

“To foster diverse and creative leaders by developing moral character, scholastic excellence, and community service through individual and group guidance.”
Upper School Advisory Program Mission
While many adults in our school community will be involved in the academic and extracurricular life of each student, the advisor, more than any other adult, is connected to the student in every facet of the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Upper School experience. The advisor serves a vital role in streamlining communication between the student and his/her classroom teachers, counselors, athletic coaches, club sponsors, parents and administration.
We see the advisor-advisee relationship as one of the most important adult-student relationships at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy.  Every NSA Upper School student begins his/her freshman year with an advisor who will stay with that student throughout his/her entire Upper School tenure.  While our school counselors will help plan a program of studies, the advisor will work closely with the student to ensure that issues that arise in the school program are addressed promptly.

During the daily advisory period, students build relationships with their advisor through conversations about academics and programs fostering personal growth.  Once each week, the students meet with their advisor to discuss academic progress and develop strategies to encourage academic success.  Two separate advisory period allows the students to engage in activities that support our mission statement.  A weekly community time brings the entire Upper School student body together for an opportunity to showcase the talents of the student body; to highlight academic, artistic and athletic achievements; and to make club announcements. During the spring semester, advisories plan and implement the annual Day of Caring event by partnering with local organizations in service activities. Through a variety of one-on-one conversations, collaborative lessons and community events, our advisors are our first line of student support for both students and families in NSA’s Upper School.
