Shaumin Liu

Shaumin Liu b. Taipei, Taiwan (1951–2024)

Painter, Industrial Designer, Gallery Owner and Art Consultant

Shaumin Liu was a multifaceted artist, designer and curator whose work left a lasting impact on both the fine arts and industrial design worlds. Born in 1951, Liu pursued a life dedicated to artistic expression and innovation, earning degrees in art and design from National Taiwan Normal University (B.A., 1974), Illinois State University at Champaign (M.A., 1977) and the University of Illinois at Champaign (M.F.A in industrial design, 1980).

Liu’s paintings, spanning abstraction, impressionism and realism, reflected her deep understanding of form, color and composition. Her mastery of oil, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media allowed her to craft works that resonated with collectors and institutions alike, including the White House, IBM and numerous banks, hospitals and universities.

In addition to her studio practice, Liu had a significant career in industrial design, working for major companies such as General Electric, Samsonite and American Tourister, where her keen eye for aesthetics met functionality. Her innovative designs earned her numerous patents and global recognition.

In 1992, she founded River Gallery in Chesapeake, Virginia, a space that showcased both her work and that of fellow artists, while also offering high-end custom framing. Over three decades, the gallery became a cultural hub, hosting exhibitions for renowned local artists such as Robert Vick and Charles Sibley. Though she was deeply connected to her artistic community, Liu remained a private individual, focused on the integrity of her work and the artists she supported.

A dedicated educator, she also taught at institutions including Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College, mentoring emerging artists and designers.

Liu was a devoted mother to her only child, Michelle Chang, balancing her professional life with deep personal commitments.

Her passing in September 2024 marks the end of an era, but her artistic legacy endures in the countless works she created, the artists she supported and collectors who cherish her vision.
