Senior Commits to UNC to Continue Academic and Football Career

Senior George Pettaway '22 Commits to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at a ceremony on September 22
With a national streaming audience tuned in and family, friends, faculty, coaches and Saints fans in attendance, George Pettaway ’22 committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Wednesday, September 22. Sitting at a table in between his parents, George first pointed toward a Penn State hat, then picked up an Oregon hat before choosing the blue and white hat of the Tar Heels.

“I was looking for an education first,” he said. “I was looking for a great bond and family atmosphere. I was looking at how they would treat my family off the field, not just visiting. And for a great football program that likes to win.”

George had more than 25 offers and was deciding between Pennsylvania State University, the University of Florida, the University of Oregon and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He visited North Carolina multiple times before making the decision. “I feel like late July was when I had that gut feeling, and I just went with it,” he said.

George is a four-star recruit and is rated number four by The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press in a recent ranking of the Top 50 high school football recruits in the Class of 2022. He is also nationally ranked as the seventh best running back in the country by 247Sports. So far this season, George has run for 749 yards and 11 touchdowns for NSA. In four games this season, he leads the area in rushing with 749 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s also third in receiving with eight catches for 208 yards and two touchdowns.

Varsity Football Coach Mike Biehl said that George has great vision and an even better work ethic. “George’s ability to compete is at another level, but what I am more excited about is who he is becoming as a person,” said Coach Biehl. He thanked George for his leadership and for showing his teammates that anything is possible if you are dedicated and are willing to do the work. He closed his remarks by reminding George that he always has a home at NSA. “You have a home at Chapel Hill now, but you will always be a Saint.”

Athletic Director T.W. Johnson ’92, who has also served as George’s advisor throughout his time in the Upper School, echoed Coach Biehl’s sentiments. “It has been a privilege knowing George for the past nine years. He is a terrific young man, and I am extremely proud of him. I am looking forward to watching the next chapter of his life.”

Congratulations, George! We are so excited for you, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for you at UNC. Your NSA family will be cheering you on!
