Saints Earn Scholastic, Athletic Honors from USA Lacrosse

USA Lacrosse is recognizing three Saints for their accomplishments on and off the field.

During a ceremony in the Hawks Library on August 3, Maddon Rose '27 and Celine Waddy '26 were honored with USA Lacrosse All-Academic awards, and Sarah Carson '26 received a USA Lacrosse All-American award. Neil Duffy, who serves on the board of directors for the USA Lacrosse Tidewater chapter and taught and coached at NSA, presented the awards.

"These awards are meaningful to USA Lacrosse nationally," said Coach Duffy. "They’re meaningful to our local chapter here. It’s a tribute to not only the players but to the coaches and, of course, the school as well."

Maddon was one of five players who earned the USA Lacrosse All-Academic award in the Virginia Private region, which includes private schools from across the state, including Hampton Roads, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Roanoke.

"I just think the world of Maddon as a person," said Co-Director of Athletics and Varsity Boys' Lacrosse Coach T.W. Johnson '92. "If you’ve seen him on the field, you know he’s fearless, and he is without a doubt the backbone of our team. I’m excited we have one more year with him, because he has gotten better every single year. But on top of all that, he is excellent in the classroom, and his All-Academic award reflects that. It’s an incredibly difficult award to achieve. Not only do you have to be great on the field but you also have to be exceptional in the classroom."

Celine and Sarah received their awards from the Virginia Tidewater chapter of USA Lacrosse, which encompasses public and private schools in Hampton Roads. Celine was one of four female players in the region to earn an All-Academic award, while Sarah was one of four female players to be named an All-American.

"It’s just so fitting that Celine and Sarah both were honored by USA Lacrosse this year, because they are a package deal," said Varsity Girls' Lacrosse Coach Connor Mathews. "Celine has been a workhorse since she started with me in ninth grade. She is the epitome of a lead-by-example human being and an incredibly, incredibly intelligent young woman. Sarah is just the second female All-American we’ve ever had at NSA. From the eighth grade, she was a standout. She immediately wanted to take the Michael Jordan moments, and as she got older, I watched her learn how to do that better and better."

For Maddon, Celine and Sarah, these awards recognize the hard work and dedication they have brought to the lacrosse field throughout their careers. This fall, Sarah will continue her academic and lacrosse career at Radford University, Celine will study engineering at NC State and Maddon will return for his final season with NSA lacrosse.
