George Pettaway '22 Makes UNC Commitment Official
Wednesday December 15, is the first day of the early signing period when high school football players can officially sign their letters of intent to continue their careers at the collegiate level. The Office of Athletics celebrated George Pettaway ’22, who made his commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill official after announcing his decision in an exciting ceremony in September.

“This is the pinnacle of what we do and why we do it. Everyone is gathered in the Thomas W. Johnson Gymnasium to celebrate someone who has reached his full potential after setting a goal for himself and working hard to achieve it. When George put his pads on, it was obvious that he was special. Very early in his career, he made it a point to say, ‘I am going to be one of the best in the country.’ He made sure that he put the time and the effort into becoming one of the best in the country, and at each stop along the way, he came out as one of the best,” said Varsity Football Coach Mike Biehl.

Prior to “putting ink to paper,” Coach Biehl wanted to congratulate George on another achievement. “George is joining an elite group of football players. On January 2, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., he will take the field in front of a national audience on ESPN as an Under Armour All-American.” Every year, more than 100 of the nation’s best players are selected by Under Armour to spend a week in Orlando, Florida, training and competing at the highest level. Coach Biehl then presented George with a box. “In this box, it’s going to look like a jersey, but it’s not a jersey. It’s a symbol of your belief in yourself and a symbol of your hard work and your effort. When you put that jersey on, you have to remember that. You’ve earned it, and we are so proud of you.”

Before George made his commitment official, Coach Biehl reminded him one last time that he always has a home at NSA. “You’ve chosen a great place to take the next step in your life. Even though you are going to start this new journey, we are your family, we love you and we’re so proud of you!” Congratulations, George, and best of luck in Florida and at UNC!
