Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is celebrating the achievements of its students, whose participation in and performance on AP Exams have led to the school receiving special recognition.
For the 2023-2024 school year, NSA received the AP School Honor Roll Gold Award and the AP Access Award. NSA was one of just over a thousand schools in the country to receive the AP School Honor Roll Gold Award, representing just 7% of eligible schools.
The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit and maximizing college readiness. To qualify for the AP School Honor Roll, 40% or more of the most recent graduating class must have taken at least one AP Exam during high school, 25% or more of the most recent graduating class must have scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam in high school and 2% or more of the most recent graduating class must have taken five or more AP Exams in high school. The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction, including bronze, silver, gold and platinum.
The AP Access Award honors schools that demonstrate a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework. Schools like NSA earn the additional award if the percentage of AP Exam takers who are underrepresented minority and/or low-income students mirrors the school's overall student demographics. For example, if 50% of a school's student body is low income, then 50% of the AP Exam takers must also be low income for a school to receive the AP Access Award.
Congratulations to our students for their accomplishments! Special thanks to our AP coordinator and director of college counseling, Mary Hunter Hardison '01, for her guidance and commitment to preparing our Saints for life after NSA.
