The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camp CounselorsThe Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is preparing for its summer camp sessions for the year 2008. Each year local young people age 6 to 21 who have been diagnosed with a Neuromuscular Disease (Duchenne, SMA I & II, Myotonic etc), are given the opportunity to attend a week of MDA Summer Camp. MDA is recruiting men and women to volunteer as camp Counselors. The local 2008 MDA Summer Camp will be held Saturday June 7, to Friday June 13, at the 4-H conference Center in Wakefield, VA. Volunteer Criteria: sample
Volunteer counselors work one-to-one with campers. It’s important for counselors to not only provide a safe and enjoyable experience, but to help their camper develop the skills necessary to become caring, self-confident and successful. MDA Summer Camp is designed to enable youngsters with neuromuscular disease to engage in the total camp experience and, as a result, increase their self-confidence. Camp activities are specifically designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. For some campers, this may be the first or only time they participate in such activities. I would appreciate your sharing this information with your Faculty and students to alert them of our need for volunteer counselors at camp. Attached is the local MDA summer camp information sheet. Anyone interested in participating in MDA’s camp program or Information about the program can also be obtained by calling or e-mailing me directly, Phone: 757-461-0177 or e-mail: bdozier@mdausa.org I also welcome an opportunity to make a brief presentation at any of your future staff meetings or student assemblies about how volunteering can help create a week of magic and memories at MDA camp for youngsters with neuromuscular diseases. Thank you for your consideration. Kind regards, Bonnie Dozier |
