Summer Reading 2008– English III Honors, 10th Grade
Required Text: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Students will read Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, a tale of a lawyer and his family who struggle with racial conflict in a Southern town, in preparation for the first unit in the fall. Assessment (test and essay) will follow discussion of the novel. We should complete discussion and assessment within the first three weeks of school. It is suggested that students read the work late in the summer.
Choice Text One:
Students are required to read one of the following works. Students will be required to compose an in-class essay within the first week of school. Be prepared to address significant thematic issues. Identify a minimum of three passages that reflect upon theme. (Works have been chosen in an effort to touch upon a range of interests and are based upon popular choices in recent years; several are National Book Award winners. Selections are fiction and non-fiction. Most have adult themes and situations. Parents, please assist in the selection process.) Students are asked not to read a work they have previously read.
