A.P. Studio Art Summer Assignments Due: August 26, 2008
There are two parts to the assignments: Production, actual work pieces, and Museum visits
Part I
Create 4 works of art to be handed in on the second day of class using the lists provided for direction-You must choose one section from which to work
DRAWING, 2-D DESIGN or 3-D DESIGN
Assessment will be given as follows:
A grade will be given on each individual piece of work including a written evaluation. These assessments and the assessments though out the year will be based on the information found on the following two pages. The first entitled The Search for Quality in A. P. Studio Art and the second from the page entitled Summer Work Critique AP Art. Please review these carefully.
Part II
Visit at least two art museums such as the Chrysler or art galleries or art shows, such as the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Show-check the newspaper for details and exhibits.
Then in your sketchbook record 2 of the 3 things listed here
- Attach a brochure from the museum, gallery or show
- Write 3-5 sentences expressing your reaction to what your saw. For example, what did you like the best? What was your favorite art? What was your favorite exhibit? What inspired you for your own work? Would you like to go again? Why or why not?
- Do some drawings and /or thumbnail sketches related to what your say or what inspired you.

Summer Assignments A. P. Studio Art
2-D Design Portfolio
Choose 4 from the following, any media may be used, size: 18”x24” and no smaller than 12”X16”
- Create a simplified landscape using primary colors
- Using overlapping geometrical shaped create an illusion of space; add color to create the illusion of shining light in that space
- Design a logo for yourself using your initials
- Create a collage showing man in nature using a complementary color scheme
- Use a map as the basis for a collage that includes painting and drawing in parts. Consider a social or political issue involving the areas represented on the map.
- Design a poster for or against a social or political issue
- Create a design of two objects, one treasured and one dispensable
- Illustrate an obscure statement and include the words. Ex. “Chickens eat biscuits on Sunday”
- Create a composition using letter stencils and work in the areas with tonal values and interesting marks.
- Make a repeat pattern using teacups in a grid-interpret the cups in various ways, value, gestural, linear, stylized, etc. A variety of media may be used but organize them so that the final piece is unified.
- Finally you could even do the same one of the above 4 times in different ways creating a series and therefore a beginning for a possible concentration.

Drawing Portfolio
Choose 4 from the following, any media may be used, size: no larger than 18”x24” but, no smaller than 12”X16”
- Draw yourself (whole body or not) using a mirror, a strong light source and an unexpected point of view
- Draw a pair of shoes with expressive marks and values, and then use that drawing as the basis for a collage that provides implication of the journey or the life of those shoes.
- Draw a view from a space in you home from direct observation at night, incorporating an unexpected or unusual light source.
- Draw a double full length self portrait, one of yourself now and one as you see yourself in the future, twenty-five years from now.
- Draw a composition of two objects, one treasured and on dispensable.
- Draw the floor of a particularly messy cabinet or closet-shoes, boxes, clothing, tools, cans etc. include great value and wonderful marks
- Study a section of architecture on your house or some other building, blow up the area and really describe the structure-think about clear strong linear description and perhaps a feeling of abstraction due to the enlargement of the area.
- Using a hallway or a tunnel of trees do a drawing that shows understanding of perspective.
- Do a study of a fruit and/or a vegetable and its cross-section. Arrange the parts on a surface and really study and interpret the textures. (Ex. peas in a peas)
- Finally you could even do the same one of the above 4 times in different ways creating a series and therefore a beginning for a possible concentration.

3-D Design Portfolio
Choose 4 from the following, any media may be used, size: not an issue
- Create a figure (at least 2’ tall) out of newspapers, tape and string
- Using the coiling method create a structure either in human form or abstract.
- Create a sculpture that will protect and bring prosperity to the community.
- Create a sculpture that brings attention to and celebrates the materials it is made from.
- Create a vessel to contain an aspect of an important person’s personality. Words could be included
- Create a sculpture that makes a statement about balance.
- Create a sculpture that will remind people of a familiar story.
- Create a sculpture about a seemingly impossible situation.
- Create a sculpture about overcoming an incredible obstacle.
- Create a sculpture about one’s hopes to change the world
- Finally you could even do the same one of the above 4 times in different ways creating a series and therefore a beginning for a possible concentration.
The Search for Quality in A. P. Studio Art
Each work of art
- possesses high quality
- shows obvious thinking, confidence and verve
- uses fairly complex visual/conceptual ideas
- is inventive and confident in the use of the elements and principles of design
- uses materials effectively; including excellent technique
- shows successful experimentation and/or risk taking
- is sensitive an/or subtle
- has a purposeful composition
- illustrates informed decision-making
SUMMER WORK CRITIQUE APART
Content/Context
What is the work about?
Is the subject of the work approached with imagination? Why? How?
What formal elements of art have been emphasized in the work? (Color, value, shape, line, texture, space)
Craftsmanship
How well is the medium used?
Does the work appear complete? (What else can/could happen?)
Composition
Is the space activated? (Could anything else happen?)
How has emphasis been created?
What approach if any of the work require further attention?
Why bother to take A. P. Studio Art? (even though it is a lot more work than a normal art class)
- A satisfying accomplishment-nice closure and a professional presentation.
- Great opportunity for individual accomplishment
- Gives great purpose and direction to your final year of art at NSA
