9th Grade Summer Reading--Ancient World History

Novel: Death Comes as the End by Agatha Christie
A mystery of suspense and intrigue set in ancient Egypt.

Upon completion of the novel, answer the following questions neatly in complete sentences in paragraph form on notebook paper or type your responses. Completion of the study guide questions combined with an in-class discussion will count as a test score. Your summer reading responses will be due the first week of school. Twenty-five points will be deducted per school day for any assignment submitted after

August 29th.

All writing should be in your own words. You should not copy directly from the book or other sources without using quotation marks and citations. Failure to properly cite sources will result in a reduced grade and a required rewrite.

  1. Describe the hierarchy in the ka-priest's family and the role of each family member.
  2. Imhotep held a prominent position in Egyptian society. What evidence does the author give in the novel to show that his family was held in high esteem?
  3. What evidence is there in the novel that the ancient Egyptians were superstitious?
  4. What did Hori mean when he said, "Death is the chief source of wealth in Egypt?
  5. Was Nofret a sympathetic character? Why or why not?
  6. At the beginning of the novel which character seemed the most suspicious to your? Why?
  7. Toward the end of the novel whom did you suspect? On what did you base your suspicions? Were you able to solve the mystery prior to the ending?
  8. The setting of the novel was in ancient Egypt. Did this make the novel more interesting or did the setting interfere with the plot of the mystery?
  9. Esa was described repeatedly as a woman of "indomitable will." Describe the roles the women played in the novel. Were they strong or weak characters? What does this suggest about the position of women in Egyptian society?
  10. What elements of ancient Egyptian history did the author have to research to make the mystery authentic?
  11. Did you enjoy this novel? Why or why not?
