Modern World History

Due on the first day of class after summer break—August 25, 2008!

All writing should be in your own words. You should not copy directly from the book or other sources without using quotation marks and citations. Failure to follow the citation expectations will result in a reduced grade and a required rewrite.

The Assignment:
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch by Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Answer one of the following questions in your essay:

  1. Define totalitarian government using a dictionary or reference book. How is this book indicative of the totalitarian governments that emerged in the early to mid 20th century in Europe? Cite at least three examples from the book in your analysis.
  2. Define totalitarian government using a dictionary or reference book. Why do many, if not all, totalitarian governments limit human rights? Cite at least three examples from the book in your analysis.

Requirements:

  • The essay must have an introductory paragraph with a thesis, three body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph.
  • The essay must be two to four pages in length
  • Stylistics: typed, double space, 1” margins, size-12 font, Times New Roman.
  • Essay is due at the beginning of class on the first day of school, no exceptions. For every late day, the paper’s grade will be reduced one whole letter grade.

  • The book is available at any bookstore, including Amazon.com where discounted copies may be purchased.
