Clubs

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy believes strongly in the development of character by involving students in a diverse range of activities and programs. The primary emphasis is participation.

In addition to the many club activities, NSA supports various community programs including Blood Drives, Toys for Tots, Salvation Army Food Drives, Operation Smile, Breast Cancer Awareness, and The American Cancer Society.

ATHENA
Sponsored by Ms. Mayer and Mrs. Starkey

This club for girls will meet twice a month and will focus on issues of domestic violence, creating a positive self-image, awareness of global female injustices, celebrating our differences and uniqueness, embracing careers in math/science/technology and fostering an interest in local and national political and social women's issues.

BAKING FOR CHANGE
Sponsored by Mr. Truesdell

This is a public service club that will bring awareness to the lack of food security in the world and in the local area. Projects will undertake a variety of forms to educate the public about this problem and to provide food to agencies in the area for those in need. 

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CLUB*
Sponsored by Mrs. Kurpe

The purpose of this club is to promote a consciousness regarding the severity of the illness, the importance of early detection, and finally, to raise funds to aid in the fight for a cure.

DRAMA CLUB
Sponsored by Mrs. Oberdorfer 

The club is open to all students interested in drama. Students should be willing to take an active role in representing the Theatre Arts program.

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
Sponsored by Mr. Booker

The Environmental Club aspires to organize students in order to advocate for and publicize those issues facing the Earth's environment that are of greatest concern to our student body and the NSA community.

GLEE CLUB*
Sponsored by Mrs. Cotturone and Mrs. Gach-Sanin

The purpose of the organization is to provide NSA students an opportunity to belong to a Show Choir that will perform during the school year. No past musical experience is required.

GUITAR CLUB
Sponsored by Mr. Birmingham

This club will provide an opportunity for students to discuss technique. teach and share songs, and have some fun. The club is open to all who play guitar or bass and would like to learn.

HAITITAN AWARENESS CLUB
Sponsored by Mrs. Hillard 

The club has two primary goals: to increase cultural awareness of the Haitian populace and to solicit monetary and other donations to help support the Maison Fortune Orphanage. 

HELPING HANDS CLUB
Sponsored by Mr. Sanford

The club focuses on local, hands-on service projects such as Lake Prince Beautification Day, Building Suffolk (similar to Habitat for Humanity), and recognizing maintenance, custodial, and cafeteria staffs at NSA. The club also participates various community service projects in the Suffolk community.

INTERACT CLUB
Sponsored by Mrs. Kincaid

The club is an international service club for young people ages 14 to 18 affiliated with the Rotary Club. The club will complete two community service projects, one that addresses service to the school or local community, and one that furthers international understanding and good will.

MULTICULTURAL DIVERSITY CLUB (MCDC)
Sponsored by Mrs. Dobrin and Mrs. Gach-Sanin

The club was established to promote cultural awareness and to discuss cultural issues locally and around the world.

NATIONAL HONOR  SOCIETY*
Sponsored by Mrs. Edwards 

The National Honor Society is a club for juniors and seniors selected by a special committee recognizing them for their commitment to scholarship, leadership, character and service. NHS members participate in service projects for the school and their local communities. 

OPERATION SMILE
Sponsored by Ms. Riddick

Operation Smile focuses on four areas: leadership, awareness, service, and fundraising. The club helps children in third-world countries and the United States with operations such as cleft lips and cleft palates. 

SAILING CLUB*
Sponsored by Mrs. Hillard

The Sailing Club introduces students to competitive sailing on two-person boats. The Club adheres to Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association guidelines. Practices are held after school at the Hampton Yacht Club and regattas are held on Saturdays. Members must pass a swim test and pay a fee.

This club works with an assigned sister school in Northern Uganda to help raise the standards of their secondary education by taking part in projects that provide school supplies and other goods needed by the school.

STUDENTS AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DECISIONS 
(SADD)
Sponsored by Mrs. Higinbotham

SADD is a peer leadership organization dedicated to preventing destructive decisions, particularly underage drinking, other drug use, and impaired driving.

STUDENT EXCHANGE ORGANIZATION*
Sponsored by Mrs. Henderson

Student Exchange is open to all NSA students who wish to participate in the Norway exchange program. Students will host students from Norway in the Fall and/or travel to Norway in the Spring.

SUFFOLK NANSEMOND STUDENT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Sponsored by Mrs. Lee

This club is made up of students interested in local history and have a willingness to participate in activities planned by the Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society, the club's parent organization. The club is primarily a community service organization.
