Chapter 4: Rocks

OBJECTIVES– The student will:

  1. Differentiate between a rock and a mineral.
  2. Describe the rock cycle and the changes that a rock may undergo.
  3. Contrast the formation of intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks and contrast granitic and basaltic igneous rocks.
  4. Describe conditions that cause metamorphic rocks to form; and classify metamorphic rocks as foliated or nonfoliated.
  5. Explain how sedimentary rocks form from sediments; and classify sedimentary rocks as clastic, chemical, or organic in origin.

Chapter 4 – Rocks

Section 4.1: Rocks Cycle

  1. Define rock
  2. Draw and explain the rock cycle—how do rocks change from one type to another?

Section 4.2: Igneous Rocks

  1. How do igneous rocks form?
  2. What is the difference between magma and lava?
  3. Igneous rocks are classified by the types of minerals in them
(basaltic, granitic or andesite) and where they are formed
(Extrusive, Intrusive). Explain differences and give examples.
  4. Most abundant rock type on earth

Section 4.3: Metamorphic Rocks

  1. How do metamorphic rocks form?
  2. Metamorphic rocks are classified by texture
(foliated or non-foliated): explain the difference and give examples

Section 4.4: Sedimentary Rocks

  1. How do sedimentary rocks form?
(Explain process and how weathering is involved)
  2. What is the difference between compaction and cementation?
  3. Sedimentary rocks are classified as clastic, chemical or organic
(explain differences and give examples of each type)

Websites to help you review:

Lots of buttons to click on to view animations. Take the time to go through the entire cycle.
Nice short overview of rock cycle.
Another nice overview—click on the words at the bottom of the page to highlight each type of rock.
