Student Life

The student activities program serves a vital function in the development of the whole student. While many of the activities in K-5 are conducted during the school day and within class groups, there are after-school activities for grades 3-7 throughout the year.

Students may choose to participate in community service clubs as well as special interest clubs, which meet after school. The Lower School SCO is actively involved in many activities including a food drive for the Salvation Army at Thanksgiving, collecting toys for the local Toys for Tots program in December, service projects for the school and sponsoring dances and other social events for older student. The Happy Club, a student organization in support of Operation Smile, meets monthly after school and participates in fundraising activities.

Other after school clubs, which students may select, are Computer Club, Drama Club, Latin Club, Chorus Club, Art Club and Book Club. These clubs meet for a specified number of weeks, not all clubs meet all year, and there is a charge for participation.

Teams of students from the Lower School are selected to compete in the local academic challenges including the Great Computer Challenge, Lego League competition and the Robert S. Sargeant Forensics Tournament. Students also compete in the Geography Bee, Spelling Bee and the Reader's Digest Word Power Contest.

In addition, athletics play an important part in the student life of the Lower School. Intramural sports meet in the fall and in the spring after school. Intramurals include softball, baseball, field hockey, soccer, cross-country, and girls' lacrosse and flag football. Intramurals generally meet one afternoon each week for 6- 8 weeks and there is no charge for participation. Boys in grade 7 may participate in football and lacrosse at the JJV level and play against teams from other schools in our athletic conference. Both boys and girls may try out for the Blue and Gold Basketball Teams that involve competition with teams from other schools as well.
