SCIENCE NOTES FROM MRS. MANSFIELD: Since I will be out on Monday, graded tests, notebooks, and veggie projects will be returned on Tuesday. We will begin our last topic, space, on Monday.

Please have your D.A.R.E. book in class on Tuesday for review for your test on Wednesday.

Nutrient Research should be complete at this time. If you have not finished transferring notes to the colored note cards, please do so by Friday. Final notes will be used to present an oral report to your science class. Continue to look for pictures of foods that contain your nutrient. We will be making small posters in class later this month to aid you in your short presentation to the class.

NOTEBOOKS: Science Notebooks should have four sections: study guides, nutrition, projects, and graded papers. We have zero pages in the study guide section; two food diaries which we have assessed for fruits and veggies in the nutrition section; zero pages in the project section; and several papers in the graded papers section. Graded papers will be taken home Tuesday as we begin a new topic.

Important science dates to remember:
Tuesday, May 13 - Have D.A.R.E. book in class for review
Wednesday, May 14 - D.A.R.E. test
Friday, May 16 - Have note cards with nutrient notes completed and handed in to me.

Tuesday, May 20 - Have pictures of foods that are a good source of your nutrient in class; we will complete small posters in class that day.

TEACHER APPRECIATION: Many thanks to students and parents for the kind words, cards, and gifts; they were all greatly appreciated. A special thanks to parents for your support and guidance at home in helping your child have a time and place to complete assignments.

NOTE TO ALL PARENTS: If you need to speak with me, please call me at home (539-3369) or send me an E-mail at cmansfie@nsacademy.org; I check both of those daily for messages.

SOCIAL STUDIES NOTES FROM MRS. GARRETT: There is no written homework this weekend. But, you should keep reviewing all the states and capitals that you have learned for the 50 States Test on Wednesday, May 21. Use the review sheet with all 50 states and capitals that I gave you to review for the test. We will also review in class.
*You have a quiz on the Pacific Coast states and capitals this Tuesday, May 13.

We will continue studying Unit 5, "The New Nation," through this Tuesday. I will introduce Unit 6, "The Civil War," on Tuesday.

I gave you a notebook check sheet last week. The notebook check is due this coming Wednesday, May 14, but you may turn it in early. Also, we will clean out the state section of your binder, so you will not have so many pages in your binder. *This will be the last notebook check this year.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD: If you have information for the whole Fifth Grade or their parents, please forward the information to me by Saturday evening, and I will include it in this section of the updates.

In the next fifth grade notes would you tell parents that I am available this summer to teach flute lessons. Maybe some parents would like their kids to get a head start on playing the flute since next year they will start band.
Thanks, Carol Richey-Yowell

ATTENTION ALUMINUM CAN COLLECTORS: If you are still collecting aluminum cans for recycling and are getting paid for your cans, I have a nice collection that I would love to pass on to you. Please either send me an E-mail or tell me at school that you would like to have them.

SEVENTH GRADE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT: Please help the seventh grade raise money by collecting rinsed 6 oz. and 32 oz. yogurt containers, drink pouches (not boxes) and 20 oz. bottles (no wide mouth or water bottles). The bottles must be dent free and tops are optional. This community service project will help to purchase and protect rainforest and endangered species in Borneo. TerraCycle will donate 2-5¢ for each yogurt cup, 2¢ for each drink pouch and 6¢ in our name for every bottle returned. TerraCycle will also pay for the shipping! This is a yearlong project. Bins are located around the campus for your convenience. Please place yogurt cups in the Grades 5-7 building bins only. Thanks for your support.

Smiles,
Mrs. Mansfield
