Dress Code

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy
Lower School Dress Code
2007 - 2008

Students are expected to present a neat, attractive appearance in school and for all school functions. When parents support the dress code at home, it makes a clear statement to their child that they support the policies and standards of our school.

Due to frequent changes in fashion, it is impossible to specifically describe all clothing styles which might be considered unacceptable for wear at school. The administration reserves the right to prohibit any clothing found to be inappropriate for school. All clothing from Land’s End School catalog is appropriate for school with the exception of athletic wear.

Appropriate Dress for Boys and Girls Grades K – 7

  • Shirts for boys or girls may be worn with or without collars. They may NOT have any writing or messages; however, small pocket logos are permissible.
  • Shirts and blouses must be of proper fit and condition.
  • All boys’ shirts must be tucked in.
  • Girls’ shirts must be tucked in unless belted or designed to be worn “untucked.” Sleeveless shirts must have a strap width of at least 2 inches.
  • Blue denim attire is not permitted except on Spirit Days. Other denim clothing may be worn as long as it is in good repair and is not frayed, faded, and/or stonewashed.
  • Shoes must be safe and appropriate for school with shoelaces tied. Backless shoes and shoes with heels and/or soles over two inches may not be worn by students in the Lower School.
  • All shorts (boys and girls) and skirts and skorts (girls) must be no shorter than 4 inches above the top of the kneecap.
  • Pants must be worn at the appropriate waist level. Belt loops require a belt.
  • Hats, scarves, or other head coverings must be removed while in the buildings.
  • Boys’ hair should be out of the eyes and not to exceed the collar in length, with no ponytails or radical hairstyles.
  • Facial hair, earrings, or other adornments are prohibited for boys.
  • All sweaters and sweatshirts are expected to be of proper fit and condition.
  • Only school or college logos may be worn on sweatshirts or other outerwear.
