From the Athletic Director

Betty Jean Riddick '72

One of the most important aspects of athletics is fostering a sense of sportsmanship among the entire school community. Athletics offer the unique opportunity to pit oneself against others in an effort to win and yet do so in an atmosphere of respect, friendship, trust and enjoyment shared with competitors and spectators. NSA strives to establish a 'sense of winning' but within the rules. This is expected of our coaches, players and spectators. We must remember that, in the end, it is only a high school athletic contest.

Therefore, coaches, players and spectators are expected to act in such a way that reflects a sense of pride in themselves and is deserving of respect from their opponents. NSA follows the sportsmanship codes of the Virginia High School League, Virginia Association of Independent Schools and the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools.

Athletics at NSA also serve to unify the student body. NSA students come from such a widespread area of Hampton Roads and from such diverse backgrounds that it is often difficult for students to find many things in common. Our athletic teams provide that unity, with students, parents, and faculty joining together in support of our teams.
