Thank you for your interest in Nansemond-Suffolk Academy!

I am often asked, “What makes Nansemond-Suffolk Academy different from other independent schools?” My answer is quite simple: NSA’s daily community experience makes us unique. At Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, students are a part of a culture that is rich in traditions, both old and new. Whether you walk down the halls to the sound of the students singing “You’re a Grand Old School,” participate in the opening Convocation Ceremony, cheer at the annual Field Day events, attend Ring Dance or enjoy the annual cookout at the home of the Head of School, you will see how much pride the students have in NSA and how much passion and enthusiasm they have for their school. This is a community where team spirit runs high and competitions are frequent between the Blue and Gold Teams.

For many, the journey at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy begins with our Pre-Kindergarten program where our youngest students learn by doing. This curriculum uses a child-centered approach in an integrated way to address the needs of the whole child with equal emphasis on social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. In the Lower School, we extend beyond our exceptional, cutting edge academic program and also teach our students to behave ethically, compassionately and responsibly. The Middle School years are critical to a student’s development and growth. The expectations are high here, but our students are given opportunities to consistently rise above those expectations and become well prepared for the next step in their journey.

As in our other divisions, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s Upper School is a community where students, parents, faculty and staff collaboratively strive toward high aspirations and work to ensure all students are well prepared for college. Beginning their freshman year and continuing through graduation, our counselors in the Office of College Counseling work one-on-one with each student to help navigate the college application and selection process so the whole family can make well-informed choices for the future.

Regardless of the grade level, the teachers at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy know the students and know them well. Our faculty is passionate about NSA and about their roles as teachers. Their passion is contagious and is evident in the classrooms and throughout campus. NSA faculty members have a modern curriculum map through which threads of civility and character are woven. Every child deserves to learn how to read and count, but at NSA we believe they also deserve to learn how to problem solve, work collaboratively and be an active global citizen.

The true story of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and what makes us different is told in the little things that happen here every day. Our well-rounded students make academics a priority while still being able to grow as artists and athletes. I invite you to visit our school. Come experience daily campus life and learn what makes Nansemond-Suffolk Academy such a unique independent school. This is a place where there is freedom for faculty and students to teach, learn and think independently. Welcome to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy!
