We "Made" A Zoo

Eighth grade art students didn't buy a zoo but they certainly did make one! The class is studying the Basic Elements and Principles of Design. The "Zoo" project was their form unit, which is one of the  elements of design. Each art student picked an animal as the subject of their box as a form. Then students researched images online and printed their final choices.

Their boxes were made out of air dry clay so students had to work quickly to finish their form. The biggest challenge was forming the clay squares into a cube. The facial features, tails, feet and other details were molded into the boxes and tops. The boxes dried over the winter break, were painted with acrylics upon the students' return to school and sprayed with clear glaze to finish their masterpieces. Each animal has his or her own distinct personality. Maybe they should make a movie after all!
